Yes, you have to pay for the privilege smile of getting rid of the ads, since
Amazon subsidizes the purchase of your device otherwise, since they’re figuring
they are profiting potentially by people viewing the ads.

I may not remember this exactly, but, you go to Amazon.com, login, find
content and devices, find your Kindle fire, and somewhere in there you check
or uncheck the box pertaining to unsubscribe to offers. In so doing, Amazon
will hit you up for around $15 I believe it is. You will get an email
confirming that you have unsubscribed, and giving you the receipt. Then, on
your device, you go to settings, and I think privacy, where you turn offers
off.
