I have a new prospect. He is a 18 month old German Shepherd/something mix.
He is all Black with BIG shepherd ears. I did some temperament testing at a
adopt- a-thon for black dogs.. A friend was helping to run it and I talked
to
her about what I was looking for and she suggested him. He is active but
pretty calm overall in temperament. He retrieves a ball but isnt fanatic
about
it. He is good with people and dogs and was cat tested at the shelter. He
reacted well when a Pom acted aggressively. He stood and looked at it. No
hackling
and no real response except apparent interest and curiosity. I accidentally
stepped on his foot and he didn't get upset. He let me examine all feet and
spread toes and examine teeth and ears..was food motivated but had a really
gentle take from hand. I was at first a little reserved as he didn't look up
at me on the first walk. I decided to take him a ways out where there were
fewer distractions. He desperately needed to urinate.. poor guy! After that
we
sat in the shade and he snooped a bit and then came over and sat down next
to
me.. I asked for more information. He was found as a stray in very thin
condition on December 9. He had been in the shelter since. His owner was
found
and he was put on a police hold for a cruelty/neglect investigation. His
owner
finally released him to the shelter. who put him up for adoption.

While waiting for a ride I sat with him to observe his behavior and
reactions. I got bored.. Ok , what happens when Sandy is bored and waiting
and has a
dog..grin.. taught him to touch with his nose, he offered a really nice paw
touch.. no raking with nails , just a perfect pat of his pads on my
hand..something Alex still has to work on..and he learned that settling down
earned
  treats from heaven!
In return, I learned that he is concerned a little with wheeled objects..
shopping carts were ok, motorcycles were a little scary and he wasn't
really
sure about skateboards. Look my training list is already started! He is
awesome and calm with all kinds of people. He pulls on leash.. bad.. he
mostly
stays four on the floor, but we will continue working on that.. he loves to
do a
paws up on your lap for snuggles. Rides in the car great.

Next hurdle, meeting my pack.. the short version .. Alex is in love but also
a little jealous of HER mom.. Hobie uses his old-man look at me and Drifter
is trying to decide if he is fun to play with.. Marcus is a little worried
  looking but mostly likes him..

Next project.. bath.. oh my god but does he reek! I picked him up into the
tub. He stood there like a statue while I bathed him.. no fussing or
anything!
He even waited to get out.. he was easier to bathe than Alex the old pro..
He has a lot less coat than she does and should need a lot less grooming. He
still smells some but is a lot better.. Another bath in a day or so will
help..

We worked in the yard on name recognition and come for a few minutes.. he is
doing a lot better.. I dont think he really knows his name right now.

I had to leave for a few hours this evening.. I was a little worried but
decided not to crate him as he seemed housetrained and I figured there wasn't

too much he could destroy.. grin.. Sometimes, I live dangerously..grin..As it

turned out I needn't have worried.. He was fine. right now he is sleeping on
the floor about 3 feet away. Alex let him know her spot was the one right
next
  to me.. grin.

I hope he works out.. we will see! Good night... er .. morning..yawn.
