If they exclude miniature horses, that will be disappointing for me and Panda. I suppose I could go on as we have been doing, and pretend that nothing had changed, since most business owners know so little about the ADA regulations that it will probably take them decades to realize that there has been a change to the regulations. But I would feel naked going out into public places with no way to defend my right to access with my guide. And I would have to face the risk that the authorities in my town would challenge me on keeping my miniature horse in a neighborhood that is zoned to exclude "farm animals". So I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the final regulations come out in our favor. On that same subject-- I will let you all in on a little news flash--Panda and I have been interviewed by a freelance writer, Rebecca Scloot, who is writing an article about non-traditional service animals and the proposed changes to the ADA definition of service animals for the New York Times Magazine. According to what I have been told, the article is expected to be published in the first or second week of January. I never like to say anything about publications until they actually appear, because things so often change due to unforeseen circumstances. So don't hold me responsible if it doesn't happen. But stay tuned for the article in the next few weeks. Rebecca Scloot was very knowledgeable and well prepared, and the NY Times checks facts before they go to press, so I'm hopeful of a well-written and thoughtful presentation of the issues--not that I think the DOJ will be listening or that the article will have any influence on the final decision, but a little favorable press coverage never hurts.
