Greg, the file your are tryinj to install is the latest patch, which is not
a full update. It usdates only the oaperating system, but doeesn't contain
the software updte. There for it has to be installed only above thhe
version 1.42. if you have an erliaer version you have to install version
1.42 first and 9nly after that instll the file you mentioned.

Thanks for your suggestion, David. I tried downloading the file from my work
computer, a second computer in our computer lab, and my home computer, which
are all on Windows 10. I also tried downloading using my wife's mac, still
with no luck.
I have not tried copying it from one computer to another but have downloaded
it directly on each machine. I have no idea why that would make a difference
but I'll try to replicate what you did and report back.
What a strange and finicky system.

USA support page. The file name is: Vario_Update_2017_11_24.zip

I recently received a VarioUltra with version 1.32. Try as I might, I could
not update it. Every time I tried the command B7B8D3D6 to initiate the
update, VarioUltra would make that awful clanging sound to indicate it was
not going to work. Just as I was about ready to pull out what hair remains
on my head, I decided to try on another computer. Guess what? It worked.
The computer I use most of the time is a MacBook with Windows Parallels,
running a copy of Windows 10. It was always worked flawlessly for me with
updating other VarioUltra units. The computer I tried instead is a Dell
computer running Windows 10. I copied the update archive file to a USB
stick, and transferred to the desktop of the second computer. I then
connected the VarioUltra to that second machine, copied the files across,
and performed the update. No problem.
I can offer no explanation as to why it would work on one machine and not
the other, but at least it worked.
Perhaps you have access to a second computer and try again?

OK, thanks all for your help so far.
The 1.33 update did work without a problem. Thanks, Rylan.
I tried the 1.42 update again using the shortcut and it started but halfway
through, the display stopped showing anything and gradually the braille
cells went from being smooth blank to looking like they do when the device
has been turned off for a few minutes and you can feel the cells. I waited a
few minutes to see if it might restart and after nothing happened, I tapped
the power button and waited 30 seconds to a minute. After nothing happened
again, I held the power button until the device powered off. It was plugged
in and mostly charged so nearly all of the display was covered in full
cells, like normal. When I restarted, I was still on 1.33. No update message
or anything.
I then recopied the update file from the thumb drive and found System under
settings and tried to update that way. I kept getting an error message that
the 1.42 file I had was not a valid update file. I tried several different
copies, including the one I downloaded from Chrome on the Mac with the same
result.
I'm going to try a couple more browsers and see if that makes a difference.
Any other things I can try?

The menu item "system" was introduced firstly with software version 1.33
that explains why this update option is missing on your device.
With version 1.33 also a CRC check was introduced for all further update
packages.
I do not know the internal structure oft he US package of Version 1.42 in
the dropbox you mentioned. I assume that an simple update directly from
version 1.32 to version 1.42 is not possible, becauseit would skip the
versions 1.33, version 1.40 and 1.41
.
You should first update you device to version 1.33 and then do the next
update step to version 1.42
However, I do not know where you could get and download the US english
update package of VarioUltra version 1.33

Thanks for the responses.
I have tried copying the update file to a USB stick and then from the stick
to the device as you described but am still getting nowhere. I have tried
several fresh downloads from the dropbox link and have even tried the
process from my wife's Mac using Chrome. I made sure the file was not
unzipped.
AS I mentioned earlier, there is no System option under my Settings. I'm not
sure why, but that means I have to use the shortcut key to start the
download. I don't know if that has anything to do with why it might not be
loading.
Any other ideas of what might be going wrong or things I can try?

Then navigate to the thumb drive in file manager
Copy it to the root of the flash disk
Go to settings
Go to update
You will see it
Click on it
It will then unzip
Then it will install

Hello all,
I have a VarioUltra 40 that is currently running Firmware 1.32. I have
downloaded the Firmware 1.42 update from the dropbox link on the Baum
support page but am not able to get the update to work. I copied the zip
file to VarioUltra Storage using File Explorer in Windows. I cannot find the
System menu in Settings on my display so I used the B7+B8+D3+D6 to start an
update. It appears that it is running and update and my device restarts once
or twice. Once it restarts though, it is still running 1.32 when I look at
the About section under Help.
Can anyone offer any advice?
I also tried copying to an emptyUSB stick and copying from there to the
Flash memory. Again, I had to use the same command though because System is
not showing up under Settings.
