Hello everyone,
Just a reminder, our speaker on Wednesday will be Eric Saczuk. Eric will be
speaking about photogrammetric image processing from drones.
Also, Van Carto Day will be held Friday downtown at UBC Robson Square. The
Upcoming Industry Events section of our web site has a link to the Van Carto
Day web site through which you can buy a ticket. As of Sunday their web site
says only 21 tickets remain.
This season we are again fortunate to be guests in the offices of the
Geological Survey of Canada at 605 Robson Street in Vancouver, in their 15th
floor boardroom. There is a link on the web site to Google Maps. Remember
that the talk will begin at 5:30. The lobby doors and the elevators are locked
at 6:00. Please try and be in before then. When you arrive on the 15th floor
you will see a sign directing you to the boardroom in the SW corner of the
building.
I hope you can make it out this week,
Doug Hrynyk

Topic: Photogrammetric Image Processing from Drones
Speaker: Eric (Arek) Saczuk, BCIT
Abstract: Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS, aka drones) technology is
just about everywhere now, or so it seems. Although they're getting
increasingly easier to fly and control, their main benefit for the Geomatics
sector, are the data they capture. In that regard, it is critically important
to ask questions. How accurate are the images? Do the 3D models precisely
represent real-world features? What are the benefits of digital surface and
digital terrain models (DSM & DTM)? Are thermal 3D models possible?
Join me for a glimpse into the world of photogrammetric image processing from
drones with a specific focus on applications to Geomatics.
Bio: Eric (Arek) Saczuk, Ph.D., Fellow International, The Explorers Club, Nikon
Professional Services Photographer.
Born in Poland, Eric presently resides in Vancouver, BC, Canada with his
family. He is a full-time instructor at the British Columbia Institute of
Technology, specializing in unmanned aerial systems (UAS), a photographer and
Geomatics consultant.
Outside the classroom, Eric’s images brighten the rooms of over one hundred
hotels, resorts and commercial spaces all over the world as the lead
photographer for Hambleton Fine Art Services. Through his company, Space Hog
Graphics, Eric has found a means of using his artistic talents to help
underprivileged children in Nepal gain access to healthcare and education. With
a deep passion for adventure travel to off-the-beaten path destinations, his
photographs feature prominently in the short documentaries “Beyond the Gates of
Phu” and “Colours of Edziza” and he just returned from an expedition to
Antarctica where he flew drones as part of his research sabbatical at BCIT.
