Hello everyone.
I would like to announce our line up for Fall 2019.
We are starting off the season with drone demonstration by Eric Saczuk at
BCIT's Burnaby campus. Note that the demonstration is on Saturday September
21st, starting at 12:00 running until 15:00. The announcement below includes
maps for those of you not familiar with the campus.
In October J Carlos Maia will talking about the evolution of Brazilian geodetic
systems.
In November Muhammad Waqas Javed from the BC Rapid Transit Company will be
talking about GIS at his organization.
Finally, in December Allan Ladouceur, Senior District Manager of EagleView -
Pictometry will be talking about the history of advancements in oblique imagery.

Topic: Interactive Drone Demonstration at BCIT
Speaker: Eric Saczuk, BCIT
Abstract: On Saturday, September 21st, 2019, Dr. Eric Saczuk will be conducting
a demo of a photogrammetry image capture flight using a RPAS (DJI Phantom 4
RTK) near BCIT Parking Lots K and L (please see attached reference maps).
The goal is to program the RPAS (aka drone) to semi-autonomously capture
overlapping images suitable for the generation of point clouds for the purposes
of generating an accurate (+-5cm) 3D point cloud and model, digital surface and
terrain models and an orthophoto mosaic. The demo will also include the use of
Propeller Aeropoint automated ground control targets.
Bio: Eric (Arek) Saczuk, Ph.D., Fellow International, The Explorers Club, Nikon
Professional Services Photographer.
Born in Poland, Eric presently resides in Vancouver, BC, Canada with his
family. He is a full-time instructor at the British Columbia Institute of
Technology, specializing in unmanned aerial systems (UAS), a photographer and
Geomatics consultant.
Outside the classroom, Eric’s images brighten the rooms of over one hundred
hotels, resorts and commercial spaces all over the world as the lead
photographer for Hambleton Fine Art Services. Through his company, Space Hog
Graphics, Eric has found a means of using his artistic talents to help
underprivileged children in Nepal gain access to healthcare and education. With
a deep passion for adventure travel to off-the-beaten path destinations, his
photographs feature prominently in the short documentaries “Beyond the Gates of
Phu” and “Colours of Edziza” and he just returned from an expedition to
Antarctica where he flew drones as part of his research sabbatical at BCIT.

Topic: Evolution of the Brazilian Geodetic Systems
Speaker: J. Carlos Maia
Abstract: An overview of the Brazilian Geodetic System from its inception in
1922 through its evolution that led to major improvements in 1976 and 2002;
upgrades which were necessary in order to fulfill the demand for better
cartographic products and to cope with new technological trends in Geo and
Computer Sciences.
The talk will cover the vertical, horizontal and gravimetric data, technical
contribution from foreign countries, and Brazil’s progress into Photogrammetric
mapping and GIS; with emphasis on the major players from the Military,
Government and Private sectors.
Bio: J. Carlos Maia, Land Surveyor, B. Eng. in Photogrammetry, post degree in
Digital Photogrammetry and Diploma of the Latin America Management Program –
LAMP. Carlos is semi-retired, working as a tourist guide during the summer
seasons and as a volunteer for the mentoring program of the Immigrant
Employment Council of BC (IEC-BC).
Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Carlos was first introduced to land
surveying and photogrammetry in the Brazilian army and pursued his studies
throughout Brazil, the Netherlands and Germany. In June 1990, Carlos came to
Canada to join a photogrammetric mapping company headquartered in Port
Coquitlam, BC.
Among his accomplishments in his 30+ professional years, Carlos was
instrumental as an international representative of the company
K2-Photogrammetry, developer of the worldwide used PAT-M and PAT-B software for
adjustment of Aerial-Triangulation in PCs. Carlos provided sales, installation,
training, trouble shooting, and customer support of the PAT programs in the
Americas and Asia.

Speaker: Alan Ladouceur, EagleView – Pictometry Canada Corp. Senior District
Manager
Abstract: This talk will focus on the history and advancements of nearly 20
years of oblique image capture experience and deployment. Oblique imagery is
transforming the way government and private sectors work. Whether handling
business as usual or responding to a catastrophic event oblique imagery reveals
details essential for understanding of assets and conditions in field.
Bio: Mr. Ladouceur has been part of the EagleView/Pictometry team in Canada
since 2007. He has extensive experience in the field of geomatics -- including
GIS project management, technical solutions management, government, military,
natural resources, property database administration, and consulting.
He is the primary point of contact for EagleView in Canada responsible for
providing creative solutions utilizing EagleView technology in support
property-centric information gathering, urban planning, public safety and
numerous other municipal government applications. During the past 13 years
Allan has worked closely with over 90 municipal or provincial organizations
from across Canada. Along the way he has accumulated a strong understanding of
how oblique imagery, change detection technologies, and 3d models support the
efforts of governments.
