Hello GISers,

Our next meeting is on Wednesday January 9th at 5:30 and will be held in the
Dunsmuir Auditorium of the BC Hydro office tower, 333 Dunsmuir. Everyone is
required to sign in after 5:30 at the security desk in the main lobby. For
more information about the Vancouver GIS User Group, please visit our
website: http://www.vancouvergis.org.

Meeting Topic:

Darren will be talking about a recently completed project on reservoir
sedimentation in the Philippines. As part of a larger study to evaluate the
expected longevity of a major hydroelectric reservoir, a unique GIS-based
model was developed to estimate the relative contribution of sediment from
different sub-basins in the upstream watershed. This information was used,
in turn, to evaluate different mitigation strategies for sediment reduction
and management. Implications for land use planning and management in
tropical regions will also be presented.

Presenter: Darren Ham is a Geoscientist with Northwest Hydraulic
Consultants.

He has eleven years of professional experience in the fields of river
geomorphology and GIS mapping and analysis. His expertise includes river
sedimentation and erosion, topographic modeling, GIS-based analysis and
interpretation of geomorphic processes, and application of remote sensing
technologies for mapping and measuring landform dynamics.
