Dear subscribers,
The city of Richmond is still considering cutting down the trees on 17th
Street in downtown Richmond where thousands of purple martins have
established a premigratory roost site which can be used by the birds for many
years to
come. Many hours and much hard work has been put in by several people to
keep this from happening but the city still insists on leaving this subject on
the table. All efforts have been made to insure the public the health risks
are minimal by biolgists. The merchants in Shockoe Bottom have not complained
to the city rather they are in favor of the trees being left alone. The
complainer I just found out a few hours ago is a city agency that runs the
Farmers
Market. They have an office in a brick building at the north end of the
market. The Farmers Market cannot make much money if any for the city but if
the
trees are cut down not only will we lose the chance to watch the spectacular
display the birds put on in the evening the merchants in the Bottom will lose
the income from the dozens perhaps hundreds of people who come to dine and
watch the birds.
Call, write or email Mr Harry Black and tell him you are opposed to
having these trees removed. That you love watching the birds and enjoyed
visiting
Shockoe Bottom and do mention if you eat there.
