I remember about two or three years ago there was what people thought was a
Cerulean in the James River park system but it turned out to be another
species. If master birders can be fooled, I feel like I have no chance. 😄
I birded the 42nd Street area for the first time recently and the canopy
was so high that seeing birds was a lost cause.
Do you have tips on learning the songs? I have two different apps, Master
Birder and Chirp USA, and they've been helpful. I've been told to watch
YouTube clips of the birds singing is a good, too. Unfortunately, going
birding with knowledgeable people is nigh impossible because I have to get
my daughter off to school during the time most of you go out.

Some do apparently sing the songs of other birds they heard from nearby
nests. Pine Warbler singing Orange-crowned is one that came up on my BBS
route last summer. Mikey Lutmerding at USGS shed some light on this for
me, but I was driving at the time and need to get something written down so
I can share the knowledge better. Hooded was also part of that
conversation, but the details escape me. I do seem to recall that counting
heard-only birds for some purposes was meant to cut down on harassment of
birds, and that is certainly a worthy goal imo.
