I did not find them today (3/22). There was also a peregrine perched near the red light on the bridge tower closest to Charles City County after two other birders left. The pelicans were my main reason for going out today. Other interesting birds were horned larks (long looks), pipits (thanks Larry-I finally recognized the sound I had been hearing when you jogged my memory), and possibly a couple of 1st winter longspurs in a mixed flock out at Shirley Plantation-rapidly increasing wind and approaching rain complicated things, plus departing dirt bikers' trucks kept spooking the birds. There may have been a hundred DC cormorants out at Jordan Point marina, the most I have seen all winter. An interesting contrast was the two red-wings at Shirley and the hundreds in the rapidly greening marsh at Dutch Gap/Henricus. Meadowlarks were singing and allowing long looks on Turkey Island Rd. Kestrels hunted at Turkey Isl. Rd., along Rt 5 near the Deep Bottom turnoff, and a third spot that now escapes me (definitely in noodling mode today!). I almost hit a flock of turkeys on Rt. 5 just east of Turkey Island Creek-how they ever reach maturity. Not a bad afternoon, considering the bitter cold, wind, and rain that set in. Happy Easter! On Friday (3/21), we looked for the White Pelicans reported earlier near the Benjamin Harrison bridge. We searched from a number of spots downriver too. Although we came up short, we did find our FOY BARN SWALLOW at the Jordan Point marina. Also, there were approx 15-20 Ospreys, as well as a number of Eagles, including those on the 2 visible nests. From my experience with White Pelicans back home in MN & SD, my gut reaction to the lastest report was that the Pelicans would have gone north - but we tried anyway. In spite of missing the big, white, fish gobblers, we had a fine time in the area. Jon & BJ Little Winchester
