Two short trips between church, kids' activities, groceries etc. yielded a female Wilson's warbler near the boardwalk in the morning. As she moved right to left in front of me and then away into the swamp I got a good look at field marks (such luxury!), and after she disappeared came the song. Not sure if that would be her or a hidden male. The WEVI nest was occupied and cowbirds were studying the boardwalk area. The nest last year was built with cowbirds observing, and they put their egg in right after the first WEVI egg. Then the nest was abandoned and torn up by whatever ate the eggs. In the evening I found a wood thrush, a Louisiana (? still studying) waterthrush, two rusty blackbirds, and the WEVI nest with just an egg in it. I am watching a stick nest that may be the Coopers' new location. Over at the pond the green heron had finally returned. Barred and great horned owls hooted, a pileated walked along a dead tree right in front of me (the camera is sooo slow to turn on). A bald eagle flew upriver and very low across the meadow with something in its talons. I have never seen one that close here. Chimney swifts were flying. As you get to really know a park there really is not a bad time of day, even in the rain. Jan Richmond _____
