10 birders participated in the August 7th trip to Smith Island MD. The weat= her was perfect with no rough water or rain and moderate temperatures. 32 s= pecies of birds were seen on the trip. Dr. Paula Henry of the U.S.G.S. gave= a briefing on Terrapins at the refuge visitor center in which the group me= mbers increased their knowledge about turtles, the need for education of th= e public on environmental topics, and the importance of assuring that devel= opment plans include maintaining access to shoreline and near the shoreline= areas for animal species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ranger took t= he group into the Glenn Martin NWR on a refuge boat giving us a unique view= of a brackish water marsh. The following species of birds were seen on the= island or in/over the Chesapeake Bay: Snowy Egret, Great Egret, Tri-Color = Heron, Great Blue Heron,=20 Little Blue Heron, Yellow =96crowned Night Heron, Black Crowned Night Heron= ,=20 Glossy Ibis, Herring Gull, Lesser Black Backed Gull, Laughing Gull, Common = Tern, Double- crested Cormorant, Mallard, Canada Goose, Mute Swan, American= Oyster Catcher, Greater Yellowlegs, Osprey, Peregrine Falcon, Barn Swallo= w, Common Crow, Fish Crow, Belted Kingfisher, Seaside Sparrow,=20 Brown Pelican. Species seen at the dock in Virginia or on the river prior to entering the= Chesapeake Bay: Tree Swallow, Eastern Kingbird, American Goldfinch, Northern Cardinal. Turkey Vulture, Carolina Wren.
