VA-birders, A Rufous Hummingbird banded at Bob Siegfried's house on November 29, 2001 in Chesterfield County, VA was recaptured on August 1, 2002 near Red Lodge, Montana. Details have arrived from the banders, Ned and Gigi Batchelder, by way of Fred Bassett, Bob Sargent and Mary Gustafson. Mary banded the Rufous in Midlothian. This is a great example of how meaningful banding data is gathered and reported. And even when the birds disappear after the banding has taken place as this one did, you never know where they will show up next. Wow! -- Montana!!! The banding details: HY-F Rufous band # 3000Y42326 left-leg-banded Also of interest is that the Batchelders have banded about 1300 hummers this season. They are capturing mostly Calloipes (over 900), Rufous going south (over 300), Broad-tailed (nest there in small numbers) and Black-chinned (so far only spring migrants). Many thanks to Bob Siegfried and his family for letting us know about the Rufous Hummingbird visiting their feeders and allowing it to be caught and banded.
