Great paddle on Morris Creek in Charles City county yesterday-lots of open water mixed with many oppoutunities to navigate into marshy areas of Arrowroot and many late blooming wild flowers. Some areas so dense they required only "half" a kayak paddle. The blue sky and puffy clouds mixed with low humidity made for a great day on the water. The number of people out could be counted on 1 hand. The paddling is beautiful with majestic Cypress trees all along the shoreline. A little river otter gave us a show with his acrobatics and not a mosquito was to be found. The drive to Morris Creek is pretty as well-a straight shot east on Route 5 past all the plantations and historic sites. The put-in is a breeze but finding a pull off for lunch proved challenging at best-glad Zeiss has a lifetime warranty ;-) Birding highlights: Great Blue Heron Osprey Bald Eagle ( 2 mature) Red-shouldered Hawk Forster's Tern Yellow-billed Cuckoo Chimney Swift Eastern Wood Pewee Tree Swallow Eastern Kingbird Red-eyed Vireo Blue-grey Gnatcatcher Common Yellowthroat Blue Grosbeak Summer Tanager ...and all the other suspects of the woodlands. Lots of fish jumping and many butterflies about-mostly attracted to the Joe-Pye Weed and Cardinal flower. Julie Kacmarcik Chester
