Hi Summer birders,
Its been a schedule-changing MAPS' season with the sweltering heat we had in
the past weeks. Our number one priority is to keep things safe for birds and
banders. The temperature and humidity finally dropped last week and we opened
the nets for round 7. We started the day with our top 3 frequent
flyers...Carolina Wrens (many fledglings), Northern Cardinals and
Prothonotary's. Also many dispersing fledglings.
We had a first for the station with a Yellow warbler come mid morning. A
beautiful juvenile female with pristine plumage.
Barred Owls were cookin' for us in the distance and many calls were heard of
Summer Tanagers and Yellow-billed Cuckoo's. Happily, we saw many butterfly's on
the wing.
A Great-crested Flycatcher we netted earlier in the season made a repeat
showing and had gained a few grams in weight.
The best surprise of the day was when the teasing Yellow-billed Cuckoo in the
canopy came down! What a beautiful bird, tipping the scale at 51.7 grams.
We will be wrapping up for the season by week's end. Looking forward to many
more dispersing young and who knows what surprise we will have.
Here's a few images from our day.
