I would think if it were a cat, you would find the heads and not the bodies.  I could be wrong though.  Sorry I don't have any other guesses.

Subject: [va-richmond-general] Killing of Backyard Birds

A friend who lives on Monument Ave in the Fan sent me this question:

A bird question – something is killing birds in our back yard.  Small brown birds – bigger than fledglings is my guess.  We find them missing their heads.  Four today alone.  And not all in the same location.  It’s starting to add up in how many we’ve found!  We’ve never seen a cat, stray or neighborly in the yard, but I’m guessing one is the culprit.  Ours doesn’t go out.  How about squirrels?  We do feed them (birds and squirrels) so there’s lots of action back there.  Any idea’s?

I don't have an answer - anyone else?
