Ah the Winter Solstice at last! Nice to have the days getting longer!
Hope you have marked your calendars for our annual JRWC on January 21, 2017.
For those of you new to the count, this is an informal survey of the birds of
the James River Park (JRP) system. Unlike CBC's, we do not count each
individual bird but only keep inventory of each species. The JRP is divided
into 8 sectors. As I receive your email (off the list serv please) telling me
you are interested in participating you will be assigned to a sector. You can
request a sector which I will try to honor.
Here's the usual schtick:
What: James River Winter Count
Where: James River Park System
Pony Pasture
Ancarrow's
Belle Isle
42nd Street
Floodwall
Byrd Park
The Wetlands
Hugenot Flatwater
When: Saturday 21 January with a rain/snow/tornado date of Sunday 22 January.
Sunrise is 7:21 am.
Who: Anyone interested in birding and brunching.
How: Email me OFF the listserv, (please) with your interest. I will compile the
list of participants and group you all into the 8 sectors. One of you will be
the team leader and will be responsible for wrangling your group and setting
the meeting time and deciding on your strategy. Please send me the phone number
where you can be reached the morning of the count. The count runs from sunrise
to 10'ish followed by a group brunch at the home of Ben and Betsy Saunders
(directions attached). Each birder asked to bring a brunch item food, coffee,
juice, fruit etc. In order to get through the door to the brunch there is a one
suet cake entry fee...really. Also leave your boots outside and only take your
boots home.
Hoping we will have sunny skies, great birds, temps that are below 75
degrees..This is always a fun event with great participation. I will try to
honor your requests for sector wishes as is possible. Thanks for your interest
and please sign up! I will send the final email with count details by January
18.
Happy Festivus!
