I did a little digging in the Thrasher archives about how long this count has
been going on. The earliest reference I could find was in the January 1984
issue, where there was an announcement for the “Second Annual James River
Winter Bird Count.” This suggests that the first count was in 1983, but that
perhaps it was more of an impromptu event, as there was no mention of it in the
December 1982 or January 1983 issues of the newsletter.
So, we’ve just held the 36th Annual James River Winter Count, I think. If we
don’t worry too much about that one that was cancelled in 2010 due to inclement
weather.

It turns out, Ellison did have a couple of Hermit Thrushes at Ancarrows
Landing. Since 2007, I’ve been trying to keep track of what’s been seen,
though I have had to miss a couple of years in there (for 2007 and 2008, I
have only total counts, and I’m missing any info for 2010 and 2011). So,
from what I know, new to the count this year were Tundra Swan, Wood Duck (?
- that one seems odd, and I’m sure it’s been seen on this count before),
Long-tailed Duck, Merlin, and Iceland Gull. Also the first year in my
records that we’ve found all three Mergansers.
I would still like to hear from the sector leaders for Huguenot Flatwater,
Pony Pasture, and the Floodwall with your lists. Either email me (ok to
scan a written list, or just take a picture of it and send that), or if you
eBirded, share with user richmond_as. Once all the information is in, I’ll
send out links to some more details about what was seen where this year,
and how this year fits in with recent years.
