It was kind of a forbidding morning, misty, spitting rain, dark and cool. In spite of that fact, there were a handful of birders out in the James River Park System, and the reward was pretty good. Trees are already getting pretty well leafed out, and combined with cloudy skies made seeing birds tough. Many of the reported birds were heard but not seen. Arun Bose and I spent time at 42nd Street and The Wetlands. Migrants present in both places: Red-eyed Vireo, White-eyed Vireo, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow-throated Warbler, Northern Parula, Black-and-White Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler. Only seen/heard at 42nd Street: Orchard Oriole (two males in an extended face-off at Reedy Creek), Rose-breasted Grosbeak (sang, but was very elusive). Arun also teased out a pair of Bank Swallows from a mixed flock perched on one of the rocks visible from the 42nd Street Island. Once again, The Wetlands were a little more productive. Additional species there: Louisiana Waterthrush, Northern Waterthrush (three singing, two gave good looks), Hooded Warbler, American Redstart, probable Blue-winged Warbler (never seen, so Brewster's can't be ruled out), Ovenbird, Indigo Bunting. We also found a couple of seemingly late female American Wigeon hanging out with a drake Wood Duck on the pond. Lewis Barnett lbarnett@xxxxxxxxxxxx You are subscribed to VA-Richmond-General.
