I spent about four hours at the West Creek Lakes (near the
Goochland-Henrico county line) checking out the waterfowl yesterday.

Oddly, I saw no American Wigeons, Blue-winged Teal, or Green-winged Teal.
However, there were a million and one Ring-necked Ducks and Canada Geese. I
have seen a lot of the Lesser Canada Geese this year which makes finder
that rare Cackler much more difficult.

The best find of the day was a first-winter male Common Goldeneye hanging
out with Hooded Mergansers. No photos but my drawings and field notes are
in the eBird checklist. According to eBird he’s FOS for our area.

Why does eBird think Brown-headed Nuthatches are rare here?
