Even in January, spring was in the air at Henricus with warm temperatures and mating activity in evidence among the birds. Great Blue Herons were standing in the trees and the Red-shouldered Hawk was busy refurbishing last year's nest near the parking lot. We walked down the Dutch Gap trail as far as the first blind and then rushed to scope out the marsh before the rain came.
