Spent most of the day in the canoe surveying Prothonotary warblers today. A
perfect day with a cobalt blue sky and billowing white clouds. Many
Prothonotary nests with full or partial clutches. We netted many females, 90%
were recaps...just 2 ladies without bands. One clutch of eggs has hatched.
There is some nest competition with Tree Swallows and Carolina Chickadees.
A fair amount of bird song up and down the river. My first of season
Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Warbling Vireo.
Many Great-crested Flycatchers, Blue-grey Gnatcatchers and Yellow warblers
sounding off. Seems like Blackpolls moved in overnight as we had a nice group
of them at the take out. A large flock of Cedar Waxwings flew over and Osprey
and Bald Eagles cruised all day. Saw a pair of Bald Eagle youngsters standing
in their nest.
Many fish jumping....
Here's a few photo's from the day.
