For the past several days, there has been a single Brant in the “Walmart Ponds”
in Colonial Heights. This bird was first found by Allen Bryan on Nov. 30, and
has been seen each day since. Birders who checked in the morning yesterday
missed, but the bird was present on later checks around lunchtime. It was
associating with Canada Geese that are regulars at this site. On the first day,
the Canadas didn’t seem too pleased with the interloper, but yesterday, things
seemed to have settled down.
The best viewing is not from the Walmart parking lot, but from lots along South
Avenue and E. Roslyn Road at the American Family Fitness, Holiday Inn Express
and so forth. There is also an access to the Appomattox River Trail behind the
Holiday Inn Express, if you wanted to make an outing of it.
There was also a Cattle Egret at this location on 11/30, but that bird was not
seen on subsequent days.
As always, we should be respectful of the businesses and their customers when
chasing birds like this.
Good birding!
