Did you get a reply to your question?  Since we are going to Italy in 
October, I was curious and went to my book.  It certainly sounds like a 
woodpecker, but I didn't find one with a crest.  I skimmed the book, but 
didn't come up with anything.  Were you there?  Where?  Did you "get" 
other good birds?
