Hi everyone
I found a drake Eurasian Green-winged Teal aka Common Teal at Middlesex Rd.
Pond in Loudoun County (right off 50) yesterday afternoon. It was in the
water on the Eastside of the muddy island in the pond.
Distinguished from American ssp by horizontal white wing stripe, absence of
vertical side stripe, full white facial bridle and drab chest. These field
marks are visible in the photo attached.
Also seen were a female Northern Pintail, m/f Black Ducks, ~20 Gadwall, 11
snipe and the resident Mute Swan. I did not see any American GWTE.
I swung by again today afternoon on my way back from another place and there
were no birds on the pond which was fully iced over, but I think the teal
will return once it melts and the submerged vegetation is accessible again.
The depth/vegetation in this pond is perfect for dabbling ducks. Almost like
a NWR impoundment - no clue why they decided to make it in the middle of a
suburban neighborhood.
GWTE have been reported here consistently since October. I suspect this bird
has been here for some time now, just been overlooked as a regular teal. On a
visit in late November Amiel and I saw a large female Cooper’s Hawk dive on a
group of (all American) GWTE, so hopefully she doesn’t make a meal out of
this one.
This is the same pond where a Ruff stopped over for a week or so last summer.
Must’ve spread the word once it made it back home.

Hello birders,
Yesterday 24 January there were approximately 400 Merganser spp on the pond
(eBird Hot Spot named "Occoquan Sewage Plant", Fairfax County). They were
mostly, if not all, Common Merganser, except for a handful of Hoodies.
I only mention this because eBird flagged the count of 400 COME as rare for
the high count. I did not make an effort to ID every bird, but in studying
about 100 of them, I did not find a single Red-breasted. So based on
eBird, this is an exceptionally large number of Common M.
Surprisingly little diversity - I did not find any grebe spp, and only 3
duck spp. But to tell the truth, I spent very little time - too cold!!

Apologies for the late post. We weren’t sure how long the female Long-tailed
Duck would be at the west end of Reston’s Lake Audubon.
It was seen from Friday (earlier too) thru the afternoon on Sunday, Jan. 24.
The Long-tailed, along with a Ruddy Duck, Bufflehead, Mallards, Canadas, and
a Pied-billed Grebe, are viewable from public trails. There is some public
property along the lake, but respect private property. Access can be gained
by parking at the Walker Nature Center on Glade Drive, or along Glade Drive,
and walking down to the lake on a paved path along the east side of the
nature center property.

Great find, Adit !! I visited today, following up on your report, and got
some mediocre photos, at this checklist.

I agree this Teal shows the field marks that suggest the Eurasian (Common
Teal) variety. I strongly suspect it's the same bird I recorded as
ordinary GWTE during two previous visits this month. This is a good lesson
for me - I have been forgetting to "bird every bird" - and also, forgetting
to check for possible rarities.
There were also a dozen Wilson's Snipe on the "island" there.
