VA Birders,
After my second successful but fairly unsatisfactory look at the Snowy Owl
as a distant ghostlike shape in my scope, and reading enviously of those of
you who were lucky enough to get killer looks, I wised up and began to see a
pattern emerging. Most of the people who have looked for the bird from
mid-morning to mid-afternoon (like me) have reported it at a great distance
between the runways, and it doesn't budge (with the notable exception of Ian
Topolsky and Brett Scheffers who had it perched on the parking garage behind
them at noon!). Most people who are there at dusk seem to have reported it
first far in the distance, then about 5:00 it FLIES in their direction on
the garage, or toward the nearby post office or Fedex planes, and is more
active. This probably reflects this bird's more nocturnal habits, although
I understand Snowies also fly by day. But it is interesting that it has a
pattern to its daily routine. It is fairly predictable where it will be
found. Any thoughts?
With this in mind, I plan to be there on the top deck, with nonbirding
husband in tow, tomorrow at sundown. Anybody for a tailgate party?
