BIRD SIGHTINGS:Â Â Â Feb. 6: Mourning Dove cooing--first time this year; sign
of mating season for this species!   Feb. 8: American Crow--making "cuk cuk
cuk" sound for first time this year; I associate this sound with mating as I
start hearing it when mating season begins for this species.   Feb. 9: Pair
of chickadees checking out bird box in back yard--female, I believe, went
inside for several moments!   Feb. 10: 2 Woodcocks in 2 different fields
along my walking route--first time this year!   Feb. 12: Barred Owl saying
"who'll" in my front yard about 10 PM--first time to hear one in some time. Â
Feb. 16: Kestrel on wire along road into Charlottesville from the west.  Â
Feb. 17: Crowd of birds (numerous species, including White- and
Red-breasted Nuthatches, chickadees, Carolina Wrens) making a fuss around an
owl box by my driveway shortly before noon, some birds going to entrance hole
to peek inside--typical behavior when an owl (screech) is in the box! Sure hope
one is!!!!!!   Â
Feb. 17: Flicker eating Smooth Sumac (Rhus glabra) fruits for several minutes
at west side of my yard. Maybe as many as 50 Robins eating red Burford Holly
(Ilex cornuta "Burfordii') fruits along a hedge in Charlottesville. Dozens on
the ground along the greenway to the Charlottesville recycling center.  Â
FLOWERS!   Feb. 16: My Snowdrops (Galanthus spp.) up from under snow with
flower buds showing color! Daffodil down the road at old chestnut barn has an
OPEN yellow flower--first one I've seen and quite early for these foothills of
the Blue Ridge Mountains! Â Â Â Sincerely,Marlene
