wrote this while talking on the phone, omitted the white-throated sparrows
sporting their brilliant new yellow lores. they were really sharp looking,
all ready for spring. jck

Subject: [va-bird] more woodies than mallards
played hookie today & went to Mason Neck, Julie Metz, & Leesylvania [for a
bit]. saw some 14 Wood Duck at Mason Neck, mostly in pairs, and then
another 4 [at least -- saw more, but it was hard to be sure some weren't
ducks that had bolted from a different pond earlier] at Julie Metz.
"only" got about 8 Mallards.
entering Julie Metz, first saw a Pileated fly over, then saw a Fox Sparrow
in the underbrush just across the trail, then saw a second Pileated fly
after the first. nice way to start.
