This is barely on-topic, but as a birder, I would certainly like to know
about this.
In our Oakton neighborhood (roughly between Reston and Fairfax), we have
a variety of night sounds. Besides frogs, foxes, and barred owls, and
occasional other birds, we also hear flying squirrels' cries. We know
we have flying squirrels from two incidents where we encountered them in
and next to our house, 9 years ago and last week.
I have heard that flying squirrels are more numerous, in some areas,
than diurnal squirrels. If you live in an area where they might occur,
you might want to listen to an on-line recording so you'll know what
you're hearing. We confirmed our suspicions about our unidentified
nighttime "bird call" by listening to the on-line recordings.

Even more off-topic: both of our daytime sightings of these truly
beautiful and strange-looking nocturnal animals involved substantial
duress for them (albeit accidental and unintentional). We are glad to
be more aware of their presence, so we can avoid disturbing them as much
as possible.
