i have just joined this list - on tuesday, june 8 at 8am in the morning , i
saw on the potomac river in great falls just north of riverbend park, a female
common merganser with 6 babies, about half grown - i was within ten feet of
them as i came to the edge of the river off a trail where i frequently walk - i
talked with carol hadlock whom i know thru the fairfax audubon society - i
realized that common mergansers do not normally nest this far south and was
interested if anyone has seen baby mergansers in this area other years - i am
not
mistaken in my sighting - i have been a bird watcher for at least 40 years and
have seen common mergansers along the potomac for years but not during
breeding season - of course, i have been back the past two days and have not
seen
them again - but this is a very isolated area - just interested in other
sightings - christie huffman
