For some reason, my report through hawkcount.org did not seem to make it to the
list so I would like to post a summary of our hawk count on Saturday, Oct. 21,
2006 at Bear Mountain Farm. Several experienced hawk watchers (Kurt Gaskill,
Bev Leeuwenburg, Jen Folts, and Heidi Herd) joined me on that day for a total
of 6 hours of observation. The added hours, trained eyes, binoculars, and
spotting scopes were much appreciated! THe day was sunny, with blue skies, no
clouds temperatures in the mid-fifties, and winds from th north ranging from
2-9 mph. Day's count included:
Bald Eagle -9
Northern Harrier-1
Sharp-shinned- 3
Cooper's- 3
Red-shouldered- 1
Red-tailed-16
Golden Eagle- 2
Unknown- 3
Total- 38
Of additonal interest, Kurt spotted a Rusty Blackbird overhead, and the next
morning 2 were in the large maple tree near my feeder. On Saturday night, 23
played a saw-whet owl tape and a Barred Owl responded in the lower spruce
forest and a Saw-whet responded in the mixed deciduous/coniferous forest along
our driveway.
