FOS Fire Pink blooming (only 1 plant)--very early!
Mature Bald Eagle flew up out of river, giving me a great view of it!
Fascinating behavior:
Carolina Wrens had built a nest on my carport shelf, but then the female
decided to add some nesting material (plant stems) to the porch shelf March 20
(I haven't seen this done before). A bit of material had been placed on that
shelf a while ago too; I removed it when I saw the wrens building their nest in
the carport. I knew if the phoebes wanted to use the porch shelf, they'd want
to stick their nest to the floor of the shelf (which they do with mud), so
having plant material there would not do!
I didn't remove the new nesting material from the porch shelf right away, and
wouldn't you know, the phoebe pair showed up the following day (March 21).Â
Much to my surprise, the male started removing the nesting material!!!!! (I
hadn't ever seen this before either.)
For those wondering how I know whether a wren or phoebe is the male or female
of the pair, the sexes make different sounds I've learned by watching, and
listening to, them for over three decades now in this location. Males and
females also have some behaviors that are different from each other.
Sincerely,
Marlene
