A hummingbird, apparently of the genus "Selasphorus,"
has been at a feeder in Washington Co., VA since
August !
The bird is frequenting a home about 1.5 mile northeast
of I-81, Exit 7, near Bristol.
I observed the bird for two hours this morning (11/20)
and watched it at close range. Several times it spread
its tail, offering a good view of the color pattern but
nothing definitive that would determine if it is a Rufous
or Allen's. It does not appear to be an adult male of
either species.
No arrangements will be made for birders or the public
to see this bird unless banding can be arranged and
it is established that it is something other than a Rufous.
