Ned,
Yellow-crowned Night-Herons are decidedly rare in the Lynchburg area,
especially in the fall; we have only ten records total for the
Amherst/Bedford/Campbell County area. Almost all of those are spring
records, falling between April 14th and May 20th; four were prior to 1973
and four were since 1984, the most recent being on May 20th this year by
Rexanne Bruno at College Lake (Lynchburg College). Ruskin Freer noted one
summer record for July 30, 1968, and there is also a single fall record,
November 18, 1985 in Amherst County. Jeff Blalock may have more records
down around Kerr Reservoir or Banister Lake, and Mike Stinson probably knows
something about the Farmville area.

The superb Great White Heron found by Mike Stinson at Briery Lake, Prince
Edward County, was still present yesterday...
A question for Lynchburg/Farmville birders: I photographed a juv.
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron at 1700 in the Appomattox River, where it's
crossed by Main Street, in downtown Farmville yesterday. Is this species a
"normal" fall visitor? I never saw the species around Albemarle County in
the 9 years I lived there. Out here on the coast, I have records of young
birds that extend, exceptionally, almost to Christmas, but it's rare to see
one this late here; almost all are gone by late September. (I was really
glad to get a lot of feedback about Ravens in the southern Piedmont this
past
summer, so any chat about night-herons would be welcome!)
