A self-described reluctant birder and friend of mine, Ruth Morduch, called
about 2:30 p.m. to say that she just saw a bird with a long beak under a bush.
She had never seen such a bird.
I got out my handy Sibley's and turned to page 192, to confirm my guess.
Ruth did the same, and sure enough, it was an American Woodcock. Needless to
say, I did not have to be urged much to rush up to her house and get a glimpse
myself. I look forward to seeing Ruth's digital photos.
That's a first for us here. I wonder if it was on its way to nearby Huntley
Meadows to get ready for the NVBC woodcock walk to be conducted on March 12 by
Larry Cartwright and Joanna Taylor.
