I led a trip for Fairfax Audubon to Occoquan Bay NWR in Woodbridge early
this evening (3/15) to view woodcock display flights, and the 15 people
who attended were not disappointed. Starting at about 6:35, we had
woodcock calling and displaying all around us along the road, only a
hundred yards or so from the parking lot. The show lasted beyond 7:10,
when we could no longer see. We probably had a dozen birds within
hearing range, and there seemed to be at least one in the air most of
the time. At times one would zoom by close to our heads. I can only
immagine how many woodcock the refuge contains.
Special thanks to Martin from Fish and Wildlife who let us in to the
refuge, pointed out some good spots, and provided us with many
interesting facts about the wildlife at the refuge while we waited for
the show to start.
