We have 2 Wood Duck nest boxes on our small pond. In one nest box the hen
is incubating and we rarely see the male except in the evenings when he
accompanies the female returning to the nest box for the night, which is
typical of behavior observed in other years. The other nest box also has an
incubating female, but here a male duck hangs out just below the box which
is at pond edge for hours each day. He disappears late afternoon but
returns most evenings with the hen who goes immediately into the nest box.
Is he on guard against any competition? Or is he just a very sensitive
male?
