Well, I was afraid that what looked to me like a Wilson's Warbler, the
unfortunate bird that flew out in front of my car on the Parkway
recently, was something else.
I had a knowledgeable friend check out the bird, which I had frozen
since then, and he says in his opinion it's a juvenile hooded warbler.
In my own defense I have to say that it STILL looks to me exactly like
the illustrations in Sibley and Kaufmann of the Wilson's, but Clyde
Kessler has more birding experience in his little finger than I do in my
whole body, so I will defer to his far greater expertise.
I sorta thought it might be a juvenile something-or-other or a
"confusing fall warbler," and I was right. The bright side is that this
unfortunate fatality was of a far more common species than the Wilson's.
On another topic, boy the woods are quiet in the middle of the day now.
I would say we are just about in migration mode. There is that
momentous hush before the whole southward movement takes off beginning
in a few weeks.
