I visited Wilna late Saturday afternoon on my way to spend the night
with my parents in Warsaw. I saw my first of the season Juncos in the
edge of the woods. Trying to look at the Tree Swallows flying over the
fields I accidentally found 5 Wild Turkeys foraging along the tree
line between the house and the pond. There were loads of Palm Warblers
in the same area with the Juncos on my way back out.
Early Sunday morning I heard the opening notes to the White-throated
Sparrow song and saw my first of season ones at my parents' house. Two
Ruby-crowned Kinglets hopped at close range in the fig bush. Back at
Wilna in mid-afternoon an immature Bald Eagle was flying over the
pond. Eastern Bluebirds and an Eastern Phoebe were spotted from the
parking area for the pond. As I turned to leave a male Northern
Harrier swept over the fields. While I was scanning the edge of the
woods for the turkeys my sister yelled bird, Bird, BIRD! as a Wilson's
Snipe barely cleared the hood and sunroof of my truck. Great Blue
Heron, Belted Kingfisher and a beaver were seen in and around Cat
Point Creek. Several American Kestrels perched on wires around the
Northern Neck. Along the road leading in to Wilna was a breathtaking
swath of Closed Gentians.
