I once saw a crow pursue, capture, and kill a chipmunk. Once the crow had
caught the chipmunk, it killed the chipmunk by pounding it on the top of its
head with its beak. That chipmunk wasn't as lucky as Craig Tufts' bat!

Last Friday, in addition to seeing a good number of birds in my part of
southwestern Loudoun
County, I also witnessed an interesting raptorial behavior by a crow. I
am not sure which crow species it was.
At about 6:15 AM, above a country road flanked on both sides by nearly
overcovering canopies of oak, tulip tree and hickory, I watched a red
bat make three feeding circuits over a 100-150 yd distance. After the
first complete loop, a crow started actively pursuing the bat, nearly
catching it three times. The crow followed the fleeing bat very closely
looking not unlike an accipiter chasing a songbird or dove. The bat
escaped. This time.
