The Williamsburg Bird Club convoyed down the Colonial Parkway from
Williamsburg to Yorktown this morning, January 20. We started at College
Creek where we saw Bald Eagles, mature and immature, perched in the trees.
Then we proceeded down the Parkway to Yorktown, stopping at the pull-outs to
check the water fowl on the York River. Several rafts of Ruddy Ducks were
visible but the quantity of birds was not high. Perhaps the stormy weather
in the northeast will push some more birds our way.
Between 8 and 11 am, we had 19 birders, 20 knot winds, 37 degrees, and 38
species. Gosh it was cold. All birders were in their winter plumage!
Tom Armour was our intrepid leader. Participants were: Mary Anne and John
Fennell, Bob and Cynthia Long, Duryea Morton, Jan Garrity, Joe Piotrowski,
Joanne Andrews, Shirley Devan, Rick and Marian Bennett, Chuck Rend, Bill
Williams, Fred Blystone, Eleanor Young, Sue Brandon, and Alex and Mike
Minarik.
Highlights were: Horned Grebe (1) and Common Goldeneye (8) all seen in good
light at Yorktown Beach. Both were near shore and were easily seen with
binoculars. Everyone got excellent looks from the scopes.
