Greetings to all:
After several attempts at night and feeding the local bug population and not
having any luck finding any Whip-poor-wills during the past few weeks, this
morning I decided to try early in the morning.
So I got up at 0430 hrs this morning on 04 June 2006 and had much better
luck finding Whip-poor-wills. From 0500 to 0600 hrs I made the following
stops:
At my first stop I had 3 WP-wills calling and also got an Eastern
Screech-owl.
At my second stop I got 3 WP-wills calling and 2 Great Horned Owls.
At my third stop for WP-wills, I had 3 calling and another 2 Great Horned
Owls.
On my way home I stopped for Chuck-will-willows but had no luck with them,
but did hear turkeys calling twice.
At my last stop at Banister River Wildlife Management Area on St Rd 716, I
found a Yellow-crowned Night Heron in a creek. I have found my first YCNH
for Halifax Co. years ago at this very spot in an oak tree above the bridge
over the creek. A few years later, I found four YCNH in the woods about 1/8
of a mile up the creek and have seen them off and on nearly every year since
then in April and May. This will be my first June record for them.
At noon today while at my wife's parents house on St Rd 716, I had an adult
Bald Eagle to fly over our heads.
