I had a really good morning at Kerr Dam in Mecklenburg County.  When I
arrived at Tailrace, the hydroelectric plant was generating, so there were
thousands of gulls feeding in the flowing water.  After trying to estimate
some numbers and failing to find any rarities, I moved to the upper side of
the dam where I found a large mixed flock of ducks.  Highlights here were
the continuing White-winged Scoter among the 16 duck species represented,
the continuing Red-throated Loon, and a Red-necked Grebe that I almost
missed because it was tucked into a group of Greater Scaup with its head
down.  Other notable ducks were Pintail, Shoveler, Redhead, Green-winged
Teal, and Red-breasted Merganser.  From the Visitor's Center, I found an
adult Lesser Black-backed Gull mixed in with a large group of Ring-billed
Gulls.  Presumably the same bird was seen later from Tailrace.  The
Loggerhead Shrike was also found from it's usual location in Palmer Springs.
