I had to drop someone at Dulles Airport this morning, so I stopped in
parking garage 2 to look for the Snowy Owl. No luck. Found the Rough-legged
Hawk right away, plus 2 No. Harriers, and 3 Red-tailed Hawks. And one of the
Red-tails put up a small flock of Am. Pipits.

???? Thirty-two birders assembled at Huntley Meadows this cool and sunny
morning for the weekly Monday Morning Birdwalk. We saw a total of forty-two
species on a morning when the boardwalk was a bit slick and there a thin
layer of ice covering much of the wetlands. Notable was one of the largest
assemblies of Canada Geese that we have seen in quite some time. We also saw
all seven woodpecker species that are usually present in the region at this
time of year. Five species of ducks rounded out the waterfowl.

A Cackling Goose was seen north of the Belle Haven picnic area. Very
stubby bill, block head and quite tiny, but easily lost among the nearly
1,000 Canada Geese.
Also had OC warbler, Pine warbler, Baltimore Oriole and BG Gnatcatcher.
Tomorrow should be another good day for observation there.
Unfortunately, two active duck hunting bliinds at Dyke Marsh scattered
waterfowl and made observation very difficult

There was a Snowy Owl in the OSV of Assateague Island National Seashore, MD
on Friday, 12/15, but we couldn?t relocate it on Saturday. Monday, 12/18 we
saw a Snowy Owl (at a great distance) in the marsh at Fowler Beach,
Delaware. Also at Fowler Beach were several Short-eared Owls, Northern
Harriers and a Rough-legged Hawk.
