I am not familiar with what dates are very late, or reasonably common.
But I did see a female Red-Breasted Merg on the Shenandoah River on
Saturday June 2nd, at Shenandoah River State Park. She was alone, and
she flew off to the north. Probably a late migrant. Is this also unusual?

Yesterday, Saturday, June 2, my family and I observed a lone male Common Merganser in alternate plumage in the James River between the Rt. 15 highway bridge and the New Canton VDGIF boat landing, Buckingham County. This is a very late record for this bird. Gold Book (Rottenborn & Brinkley) lists extreme late date of 15 May for Piedmont.
