From the end of small game seasons at the end of February until turkey season,
most WMAs would have little to no hunter traffic, and once again after turkey
season there would be no hunting activity until September in most cases. I
hunt small game in NC and VA and I can tell you right now that one of the LAST
places I would spend time hunting would be on the WMAs. There are exceptions
for some small game animals, but in most cases WMAs have decent habitat for
only deer and turkey. On the coast perhaps the waterfowl hunting on them is
decent...wouldn't know. Many hunters have the same safety concerns that
birders have regarding public hunting lands and stay away from them.When I
hike on gamelands as they're called in NC, I see few hunters or vehicles of
folks that could be hunting. If you visit a gameland or WMA in the middle of
the week, you will quite likely observe no hunting activity. Just thought I'd
share these thoughts...
