Today I went with the VSO to see the Red-cockaded Woodpeckers at Piney
Grove. We saw several clusters of woodpeckers and watched as they carried
food to
their young. One of the highlights of the trip was when, through the use of
a video camera mounted on a long pole, we actually saw two very young baby
woodpeckers in their nest cavity. Thanks to Mike Wilson of the Center for
Conservation Biology for showing us the birds. I took a couple of pictures of
the woodpeckers. In the first one you can see the bands which ID every RCW
at Piney Grove and what looks like the red cockade on the back of the bird's
neck. There are some pictures from some other trips on this page too.
