Today I decided to do a little birding in Campbell County since it was
partly cloudy and rather cool. On my foray down S.R. 737, I came upon an
area
that has been clearcut on both sides of the road for a mile or more over the
past few weeks. There was nothing left standing except three or four trees
near an abandon shack. I pulled into the logging road and immediately saw 2
redheaded woodpeckers on a power pole. I got out of my car and one of the
woodpeckers joined a hairy woodpecker in one of the trees by the road. Here I
had two species that are becoming very scarce in this area and it made me feel
sick. I walked out into the clearcut which was almost as far as the eye
could see and looked into a ravine where a few little trees had been left
standing and there was another red headed woodpecker! No doubt the redheaded
woodpeckers as well as the hairy had all lost their nest trees probably with
young
or eggs and would be gone from the area soon. The one red headed woodpecker
was still trying to start a hole on the power pole, the only thing left
standing. It was a sad day to be a birder.
