The following was received from David Clark (of Norfolk), who saw an American
White Pelican last month at Fort Story:
"A couple of weeks ago, I was at Fort Story on a Sunday afternoon. As I
drove along the main road heading towards the Shore Drive exit, an M.P. car
ahead
of me came to a stop in the middle of the road and pulled off to the side to
allow a large bird to waddle across the street. It was an adult American White
Pelican. I pulled over, but the officer asked me to move along. She said
they get injured birds fairly frequently and that she would make a call to get
someone to take care of this one. I don't know what the final outcome was, but
I
suspect the 24th White Pelican you referred to in your posting is sitting in
rehab somewhere."
After a New Year's full of so many birds, we should all be in rehab
somewhere. Anyhow, it seems that if rehabilitated, this individual could also
be the
same individual as the Craney Island bird. But I suspect that the bird might
still be in treatment somewhere, or that it expired and has been discarded.
If anyone knows of its whereabouts, this would be a good thing to know about
for the record.
David also mentioned 4 Common Redpolls just south of the border, at Mackay
Island NWR (North Carolina), and Bill Williams and Mitchell Byrd found a nice
Common Redpoll perched at Fort Story at the overlook near the memorial cross,
yesterday.
