Here is a list of birds sighted over the weekend here in Suffolk:
Osprey - Wintering birds are in place.
Clapper Rail - I was able to coax out a bird to the edge of the water - it
didn't know what to make of the orange kayak. I was able to dig around in
my backpack, get the ol' digital camera out, and get a few shots. It
watched me for 5 minutes or so before I finally had to move on.
Laughing Gull - Still present in good numbers.
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 1st one noted for the winter.
Sedge Wren - 1 in my special "sparrow" marsh.
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - I heard this guy early Saturday and later spotted
it. Also had presumably the same bird on Sunday with YRWAs & RCKIs.
Yellow-rumped Warbler - Low numbers so far.
Common Yellowthroat - 1 female seen on Friday (11/19) and a bright male on
Saturday (11/20)
Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrow - 3 found in the "sparrow" marsh - all of the
interior race.
It is amazing what you can see if you actually GO BIRDING! The Nansemond
River was "slick calm" on Saturday morning so I blew off the chores and hit
the water for a couple of hours.
I'm hoping we'll be able to get the gnatcatcher on the Christmas bird count.
